OVERVIEW:
The power of now is a book I return to in every season of my life, it’s always on stand by in my purse or on my nightstand. It is a modern spiritual classic that invites us to awaken from habitual patterns of thinking and to connect us with the timeless now - the present moment. Eckhart draws wisdom from a variety of spiritual traditions and doctrines, while remaining accessible and practical. The crux of this book is how identification with the mind creates suffering, and how presence offers a clear pathway to innate peace. Through very simple yet profound teachings, the book teaches us to observe our thoughts rather than becoming consumed by them, cultivating a deep inner stillness & vibrant aliveness beneath all the mental noise.
WHY IT’S APART OF THE SADHANA ACADEMY’S LIBRARY:
The book is a very powerful bridge between ancient wisdom and modern life. While many spiritual texts explore concepts such as consciousness, ego and liberation - The Power Of Now translates these same teachings into practical guidance that can be applied in everyday moments. It belongs in the Inner Library because it offers a direct invitation to experience presence rather than merely understand it intellectually. Peace is not something we achieve in the future - it is something we access in the present.
KEY TEACHINGS:
The present moment is all we truly have. Much of our suffering arises from dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Freedom exists in the timeless now, peace is available when we learn to inhabit the present moment fully.
YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS! The mind is a valuable tool, but it is not your identity. By observing thoughts rather than being absorbed by them (identification with the mind) a deep awareness emerges.
The ego thrives on identification - it seeks validation through roles, achievements, possessions, opinions etc. Lasting peace comes from recognizing that our essence exists beyond these fleeting identities.
Presence is a spiritual practice. Awakening is not reserved for on mountaintops, spiritual retreats, the ganges river. It exists within you as your nature of being, it’s just hiding beneath the content of the mind.
REFLECTION PROMPTS:
Where in my life do I spend more time in the past or future - instead of the present?
What recurring thoughts or stories loop in my mind?
How do I feel when I am fully present?
What situations trigger reactivity, resistance or ego patterns?
